Both support Bluetooth. The 7130 family of devices have a 2.25” screen with a 240x260 pixel display with a modified version of a QWERTY keyboard called SureType, which basically has two letters per key. RIM Blackberry 7130c is offered through Cellular One / Dobson and Cingular and the 7130e is offered through Alltel, Sprint , U.S. Cellular, and Verizon Wireless. HTC Faraday 2125Based on Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone Edition operating system. The HTC 2125 supports the GSM / GPRS / EDGE wide area air interface technologies, along with Bluetooth and IrDA communications. Has a numeric keypad. The HTC Faraday is offered by Cingular rebranded as the 2125.
Motorola Q SmartphoneBased on Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone Edition operating system but has a lot of similarities with full PDA devices. The 2.4” (320x240 pixel display) is rather large for a Smart Phone and it does come equipped with a QWERTY keyboard. A key differentiator with PDA devices is that it is comparatively razor thin at .45 inches thick or about half the thickness of a traditional PDA. Supports the CDMA/1xRTT/EV-DO wide area air interface technologies, along with Bluetooth. The Motorola Q is available from Cellular One. PDA PhonesHTC Apache / MDA / (Hermes)Based on the Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Phone Edition operating system. This device has a large 2.8 inch QVGA screen and a side sliding QWERTY keyboard. All versions support Bluetooth and IrDA short-range communications as well as Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g). The HTC Apache supports CDMA EVDO wide area air interface technology. The HTC Apache is available through Sprint and Verizon, rebranded as the XV6700. The HTC MDA supports GSM / GPRS / EDGE wide area air interface technology. The HTC MDA is offered through Cingular and T-Mobile rebranded as the 8100/8125. The HTC Herms will offer UMTS support. Nokia 9300This device actually has two operating systems and essentially two different modes of operation, blurring the line between a Smartphone phone and a PDA phone. When viewed in “normal” mode, it looks like a Smart phone running Nokia's “Series 40” version of the Symbian operating system. In this mode, a 128x128 pixel screen is visible with a numeric keypad. One side of the 9300 is hinged and if flipped open, there is a brilliant 640x200 pixel display running the “Series 80” operating system and a QWERTY keyboard. The 9300 supports GSM / GPRS / EDGE wised area air interface technologies, along with Bluetooth 1.2 and irDA communications. A 9300i version adds Wi-Fi communications. The Nokia 9300 is offered through Cingular.
Samsung SCH-i730Based on the Windows Mobile 2003 Pocket PC Phone Edition operating system. This device has a 240x320 pixel screen with a bottom slide out QWERTY mini-keyboard. The Samsung SCH-i730 supports CDMA/1xRTT/EVDO wide area air interface technologies, along with Bluetooth 1.1 and Wi-Fi 802.11b. A similar model, SCH-i830 supports roaming to GSM as well as CDMA networks by also supporting GSM/GPRS/EDGE but giving up the Wi-Fi communications. Both the SCH-i730 and the SCH-i830 are available from Verizon. The SCH-i730 is available from Cellular One.
HP iPAQ hw6515 Mobile Messenger
Based on Windows Mobile 2003 Pocket PC Phone Edition (2 nd Edition) operating systems. This device has a large 3” screen with a 240x240 pixel display and a QWERTY keyboard. The iPAQ hw6515 supports GSM / GPRS / EDGE wide area air interface technologies along with Bluetooth 1.2. The iPAQ hw6515 is offered through Cingular.
Palm Treo 650Based on the Palm OS 5.4 operating system. This device has a 320x320 pixel display and a QWERTY keyboard. There is a GSM version that supports the GSM / GPRS / EDGE wide area air interface technologies and a CDMA version that supports CDMA / 1xRTT. Both the CDMA and GSM versions support IrDA and Bluetooth. The GSM version is offered through Cingular and the CDMA version is offered through Cellular One, Sprint and Verizon.
Palm Treo 700 (p/w)There is a Treo 700 version based on Palm OS Garnet 5.4.9 operating system (Treo 700p), and a Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Phone Edition operating system (Treo 700w). Both the Treo 700p and the Treo 700w have 2” screens with 320x320 pixel displays. Both versions support the CDMA / 1xRTT / EV-DO high speed data rate along with Bluetooth 1.2. Sprint and Verizon Wireless offer the 700p and Cellular One and Verizon Wireless offers the 700w.
RIM BlackBerry 8700c/gBased on the BlackBerry 4.1 operating system. The device has a 2.5” screen with a 320x240 pixel display with a full QWERTY keyboard. The 8700g supports the GSM / GPRS / EDGE wide area air interface technology with Bluetooth support. The RIM BlackBerry 8700g is offered by Cellular One / Dobson, Cingular, SunCom and T-Mobile.
Wireless PC Cards and Express CardsWireless cards offer an alternative to converged devices even if some level of voice has to be supported. While the thought of holding a laptop to the side of your face may not offer up an image of confident, cool professionalism in the age of Bluetooth headsets, this can work.
CDMA CardsDual-band EVDO Revision 0, 1xRTT, IS-95 (850 / 1900)The Sierra Wireless Aircard 580 (same hardware as the UTStarcom 5220) and Novatel V620/S620 are both dual-band, PC Card Type II options. The Novatel XV620 is an ExpressCard form factor that is an option for new laptops that may not have PC Card slots. The Audiovox 5740 and the Kyocera KPC650 offer dual-band Type II PC cards modems.
Dual-band EVDO Revision A, 1xRTT, IS-95 (850 / 1900 )The Novatel V640 is an ExpressCard that supports the higher data rate EVDO Revision A standard. The Sierra Wireless Aircard 595 is due out in the seconds half of 2006. The Franklin Wireless 550 CDU is a USB modem card, that is expected to be offered by Sprint PCS in the 3 rd quarter of 2006.

Tri-Band UMTS / HSDPA (850 / 1900 / 2100) and Quad-band GPRS / EDGE / GSMThe Sierra Wireless Aircard 860 and the Novatel Merlin U870 are PC Type II cards. The Novatel XU870 ExpressCard fits the newer laptops without Type II card slots. |
